What is Selenite?
Selenite, satin spar, desert rose, gypsum flower are crystal habit varieties of the mineral gypsum. The similar names both derive from  Greek word selḗnē meaning Moon.
Though sometimes grouped together as “selenite”, the four crystalline varieties have differences. General identifying descriptions of the related crystalline varieties are:
Selenite – Most often transparent and colourless
Satin spar  –Most often silky and fibrous. Has a vibrant lustre
Desert rose – Rose shaped gypsum with outer druse of sand or with sand throughout
Gypsum flower –Gypsum flowers are curved rosettes of fibrous gypsum crystals found in solution caves.
Most selenite that is bought and sold commercially is in fact Satin Spar. Don’t fret thought, all varieties of the mineral gypsum have the same metaphysical properties.

How Has Selenite Been Used in the Past?

Selenite is studied in the Naica mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, this is home to a magnificent cavern filled with these white crystals. In this mine Selenite forms in enormous crystals the size of telephone poles!
Also known as satin spar gypsum, Selenite has shed a light on the origins of life on Earth! Prior to 2004, gypsum was only thought to exist on the planet Earth. However, it was confirmed too also be found on Mars in 2004, which hints at the presence of water on Mars, and thus the possibility of life.
